30 Lessons I’ve Learned in 2018

Since I hit the big 3-0 this year and we’re approaching 2019, I thought I would take some time to reflect on this year and share some things I have learned. These are in no particular order or significance.

I hope you can relate and share your own! I would love to hear your story and what 2018 has taught you.

My 30 Life Lessons from 2018

  1. Sometimes, you have to do what you don’t want to do until you can do what you want to do.
  2. Being caught in a period of waiting for something and the unknown is enough to drive a person mad.
  3. Abraham Lincoln once said, “Whatever you’re going to be, be a good one.” I agree.
  4. I know it is cliché, but another door is meant to open when one closes. You may have to hunt for it, or it may just pop up out of nowhere, but it is there.
  5. Sometimes, the best decisions are the ones who make on a whim, without much consideration or thought. Just say “YES!” and dive in. You’ll figure it out later.
  6. One of the most rewarding things in life is proving someone else or yourself wrong and doing the impossible.
  7. The best form of revenge is to be happy and thriving.
  8. Something worth leaving behind? A toxic person, job, place, etc.
  9. I feel closest to God when I am running outside, first thing in the morning as the sun is coming up. I find that’s when I truly feel connected to God and the world around me. Getting outside and finding your place in nature and the world–your spirituality–is so important.
  10. Your mind is what you have to convince to keep pushing through. Your body will follow your mind. Change your mind, change your life.
  11. Never stop learning and growing.
  12. Strive to be better than who you were yesterday. Compete with yourself, not others. The results will show, and you will prove yourself. See #3.
  13. Saying you’ll do something is nice, but actions will be what gets stuff done.
  14. Things may not come together instantly, but when they do, it is like a weight is lifted off your shoulders.
  15. Do something that scares you every so often.
  16. I challenge you to not go with the flow. It is boring anyways.
  17. Cherish what you have, for you may not have it tomorrow.
  18. All good things don’t necessarily need to come to an end. Sometimes, it’s coming to an end and we’ve been in denial about how bad it really was. We may not realize it, but we are being done a favor.
  19. There is always room for one more. This can be a good or bad thing. One can be too many, or one can never be enough.
  20. Sometimes, we have to force ourselves to do good for ourselves. It doesn’t always come naturally or what we want to do because it takes effort or time. Sometimes, wellness is through purposeful choices, even when we don’t want to do it.
  21. Know when to keep going and when to hang it up.
  22. There is no shame in asking for help. To me, that shows strength to know and admit something isn’t right and you need to fix it.
  23. You can be unstoppable once you can truly focus on what you’re doing, but you have to learn to tune out the white noise.
  24. There are different types of beauty. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder.
  25. It is not your job to change or save people. I believe only Christ can do that.
  26. If you’re trying to make yourself do something that you absolutely hate, you will not be successful. You will tire and burn out. Find something you love and stick with it.
  27. Sometimes, even your best will not be good enough, and that is okay.
  28. You have to learn to be your own cheerleader. I know it is hard, but to put faith in others to fulfill that role for your will lead you to nothing but disappointment.
  29. You can’t be angry while doing Zumba.
  30. Arriving to my 30th birthday was truly a blessing because there was a time in my life I seriously didn’t think I was going to be around for my 21st birthday. Life truly is a gift.
